SMOKING – Say “NO” to it!

Smoking is a practice in which cannabis or tobacco is burned and the smoke is inhaled or tasted. It is one of the most familiar forms of recreational drug use. The most renowned form of smoking practiced by large segment of people across the globe is tobacco smoking. In other words, tobacco is the most frequent product smoked and smoking is the most frequent method of consuming tobacco. The widely used and most common mode of smoking is through cigarettes. The combustion of cigarette releases psychoactive addictive chemical known as nicotine which is detrimental to human health. Research suggests that every year more than 4.9 million people die around the world due to smoking. The practice of smoking had been recorded as early as 5000 BC and after conquest of the Americas and the European exploration, it rapidly spread to the rest of the world.

There are many health risks associated with smoking such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, hypertension etc. The habit of smoking usually starts during early adulthood or adolescence. Smoking has elements of rebellion and risk- taking which often encourage young people to indulge in it. Passive smoking or secondhand smoke is the inhalation or breathing of smoke, from tobacco products utilized by others. Passive smoking causes the inhalation of tobacco smoke by people within that environment. The most common form of addiction is chain smoking. Chain smoking is the practice of igniting a new cigarette immediately after one is finished for personal consumption. Chain smoking is the practice which sometimes utilizes the finished cigarette to ignite a new cigarette.

Many organizations fighting against smoking claim that teenage smoking habit is greatly influenced by culture as well as peer pressure. Smoking is injurious to health and a dangerous practice on the face of this planet. Smoking is addictive and harmful which possesses hazardous consequences. Smoking provides enjoyable sensations during the early stages and thus eventually become a source of positive reinforcement. Many smokers claim that the depressant and stimulant effect of smoking enables them to increase their concentration as well as calm their nerves. It is necessary to curb the practice of smoking in order to lead a disease free and healthier life.
