Action on Smoking and Health, originated in1967, is the America’s first, oldest, and biggest anti-smoking organization. It is a well-known organization which frequently takes hard-hitting legal actions and other steps to fight against smoking and to safeguard the rights of non-smokers. For over 40 years, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has been one of the most effective and successful nonsmokers’ rights and anti-smoking organizations in the world. Few prominent citizens, attorneys, and a distinguished body of physicians formed this organization who felt the need of an efficient organization to curb the practice of smoking and to represent nonsmokers’ rights.
The actions taken by this organization have helped to lower the insurance premiums for nonsmokers; ban smoking on buses, planes, and many public places; and prohibit cigarette commercials. It has also taken steps to protect people from second hand smoke. The organization seeks to conduct campaigns for greater restrictions on tobacco and cigarette sales and publicize the risks associated with cigarette smoking. It utilizes the power of law to protect the rights of nonsmokers.
Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has made every effort to conduct awareness of the harmful effects of smoking. It works to put an end to tobacco use, and strives to eliminate the harm caused by smoking. The major role of ASH in the United States is to serve as a think tank and incubator for new tactics and strategies to eradicate smoking, and as a vehicle for spreading these new ideas to general public, legislators, and to other anti-smoking organizations. ASH has helped to promote and develop the concept that nonsmokers should pay less health insurance than smokers.
ASH is working with and supporting the Framework Convention Alliance (FCA), which is striving to effectuate and implement the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the world’s first international nonsmoker’s rights and anti-smoking treaty. ASH takes ACTION on smoking and health, and does it very effectively than many other nonsmokers’ rights and anti-smoking organizations.
