Board commissioner Raj Hundal reported that the ban is backed by the scientific community and health officials. The Vancouver park board ban on smoking came into effect on September 1, 2010. That means no smoking at any Vancouver seawall, trails, sport fields, playgrounds, public golf courses, parks, areas within park boundaries, and beaches.
The staff of Vancouver park board is concerned about the health of Vancouverites as well as about the cleanliness of the city. Smoking ban in Vancouver beaches, parks etc is a step towards protecting the health of Vancouverites and retaining the city as green, clean and healthy city.
A press release declared that the smoking ban was permitted and implemented by the park board in April, concerning results of public consultation, the risk of fire in urban forests, the environmental and aesthetic impacts of cigarette litter, and the recognized medical evidence about the significant health dangers of smoking. The smokers who violated the law were charged with a heavy fine of $500. The Board commissioner has appreciated the efforts made by several people in bringing the ban. The Board commissioner has also expressed gratitude to Vancouverites who have made this ban successful with their kind support.
