On July 1, 2010, Greece imposed smoking ban to cut back the nation’s cigarette habit. Greece forbids smoking in all public spaces to decline the nicotine consumption in the country where 40% of the populations are smokers. Greece enforced smoking ban in all enclosed areas and will slap lawbreakers with heavy fines.
The government is taking several appropriate measures to eliminate smoking from the country. Smoking ban is applicable in public transport, offices, restaurants, cafes, and in bars. Businesses which will allow smoking in enclosed spaces will be fined up to €10,000; and the smokers who rupture the new regulation will be fined between 50 and 500 euros.
Prime Minister George Papandreou declared that smoking ban will contribute in enhancing the quality of life and will also make the country more feasible and workable.
In 2002 and 2003, Greece partially introduced laws to prohibit smoking but it failed due to few loopholes and ignorance by a large segment of people. It was said by Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos that this latest law will "end the myth that we make laws that we don't respect." The Greek government states that the new law was enacted in order to safeguard the public health. It started spreading a new slogan "cut smoking, gain life."
